Stage 10 Ethical considerations-
This stage is all about how it can ethically affect the
community or the public people. This can be done due to the media and press
conferences. It can also affect the people close to the victim. There is always
a debate to whether ethically is it right or not. When the media are involved
in crime issues they can either make it better for the officers because by
reporting about the crime in newspapers it means that more people will
voluntary to help out and raise awareness for the area to watch out for example
if a child went missing. But the media can also make things worse because they
can edit crime issues to make it more eye catching for people to read. By doing
this they can upset the victim or the victim’s family because they don’t want
their crime put everywhere and especially if the story has been incorrectly
portrayed for media purposes only. This is why it could cause an ethical issue.
The same thing happens with press conferences as media uses. But sometimes a
press conference is more beneficial because the story can’t be changed and
emotions can be shown to the public and in order to this can offer support.
Usually people are too upset to be involved in press conference and this is why
it is an ethical issue because it is distressing the victim or people around
the victim. This stages importance depends on the case because many people get
the option if they want to involve media and press conferences but depending on
what the case is some people don’t get a choice. For example if someone famous
committed a crime there is so many paparazzi following them anyway that it
would be hard for them not to be involved in media. This stage is significant
to follow out because it can give useful information that can be used whenever
as it can be tracked down from media sources. If the media wasn’t very caring
towards the ethical issues involved with a person’s case it can cause the
person to be too scared to give out too much information as they will be
distressed with all the questions coming at them that they might give out wrong
information and cause someone else to be made guilty. This stage can make it
harder for a successful investigation because most ethical issues involved
means the investigation can’t do certain things, for example they can’t always
knock and ask questions to people at their house because some people find this
ethically wrong and won’t allow it. This can make the investigation harder as
it means less information can be found out and it will take them longer to find
evidence.
During my case the two daughters of Sion Jenkins had
their ethical rights breached. This is because they were questioned that much
and known to be pressured by Sion Jenkins to have a certain story that they
were changing their statements. They went to see a councillor and this enabled
them to not worry about what to say and just say the truthful statements, both
daughters didn’t want to be liable for the prosecution of their father. Once
they spoke to the councillor and gave out more useful statements it enabled
more evidence to be help against Sion Jenkins and this was the reason he was
arrested once again. Because of all the questioning and media attention they
got it emotionally distraught them and they had to see councillors in order to
feel brave enough to give the right information. Also what was ethically wrong
in my case was to arrest Sion Jenkins without enough forensic evidence and
caused him to lose his reputation as a head school teacher and have threats put
towards him. This is wrong because if he was really not guilty making him go
through the torture of being known guilty and being picked on is ethically
unfair.
