Stage 9 Process of elimination-
This step is about interviewing people that were
witnesses and getting some final pieces of information. This is one of the
final steps and it is about gathering all the evidence together such as
information, questions with people, weapon evidence and statements of
witnesses. Then certain questions must be asked such as ‘ What does the
evidence show?’ and ‘what can I conclude from my statements’ From this the
judgement should be made whether an elimination will occur or not. This is an
important step because this is the process where a person is decided to be put
up for prosecution or not. They do this by making an overall decision using all
the information they have collected to help them. For example using all the
information and evidence to put someone to court because the officers have
found out they are the criminal. This step is one of the most significant
because it is finalising the whole investigation and enabling officers to come
to the final conclusion, If this step wasn’t done correctly and they read the
evidence wrong or did a different step wrong for example the investigation plan
and collected incorrect evidence it would mean that the evidence from the
actual criminal would be overlooked and this could cause someone to be known
guilty for a crime they were wrongly charged for. This is a significant stage and is probably
one of the most significant because without it they wouldn’t come to a
conclusion of who the criminal is and take action on them. If they didn’t do
this step a criminal could be left on the loose for a while and cause ethical
issues such as people becoming distressed wondering where this criminal is and
when a case is left for a while it makes it more difficult to find out more
evidence on it. Because of it causing ethical issues it means that the
investigation will try to be performed quicker and by rushing an investigation
it could mean that they are not looking properly for evidence and this could
cause them to overlook and make a judgement on the wrong person. This stage
helps to make a successful investigation because by going through evidence and
eliminating pieces of evidence that can’t be used it makes it clearer who the evidence
matches up to and allows them to sort the evidence out ready for reporting it
to court.
In my case the forensic evidence was brought up again
and fully analysed this evidence consisted of two large blooded handprints on
Billie-Jo, and the tent peg which was never investigated for fingerprints which
means they didn’t fully anyalse this piece of important evidence as it could of
shown who was using the tent peg and helped found the criminal quicker, due to
this overlooking of evidence their could have been a mistake in charging Sion
Jenkins guilty as the fingerprints on the tent peg could have been related to
someone elses. Also a bin liner was found up Billie-jo’s nose and a hand print
out of blood on the back gate. When the interviews with the witnesses and links
with other people where made it revealed more information about Sion Jenkins
that he had a pattern of being aggressive towards Billie-Jo and was annoyed at
her that day. From all the investigation gathered they came to the conclusion
that Sion Jenkins would be taken to court and questioned because they believed
he was the killer.
