Stage 8 Identifying patterns and links-
This step is related to the intelligence stage by
looking back at this stage and analysing more into it, more information can be
concluded. Also in this stage information can be shared with different agencies
for example victim support to help them and try to conclude more from this.
They also look into the behaviour of the suspects and if there is any links of
this. This stage is another important stage as it is one of the final stages
and by going back through the intelligence stage and trying to make
identifications towards any patterns it means more evidence can be find out
making the case more clearer as to who the criminal is. By getting agencies
involved they might have clues to help investigate and come to a conclusion on
a criminal. For example if a victim was killed using a certain gun and a gun
shop agency can reveal that someone bought the exact gun three days before. It
helps the officers find more evidence towards the criminal and enables them to
be able to question them further and even prosecute them. This stage is quite
significant because if not done it means certain evidence could be overlooked,
For example finding a pattern on burglaries in an area and not applying this
information to a case that is currently being investigated. If a wrong link is
made with someone and incorrect information is given out, it means that the
investigation could have a side step and could cause them to investigate into
someone else and lose track of the criminal. This could cause an acquittal of a
guilty party. The ethical involved in this are that making links with people
can be invading people’s private lives, which can be known as wrong to some
people but sometimes this needs to be done in order to find out the right
information. By identifying more links and patterns it means that more information
can be found out and this could cause the case to be more successful if a suspicion
can be made quicker.
In my case they looked back through the intelligence
step they did and the patterns on Idelia’s raping and murdering younger girls.
Due to this they weren’t initially sure that Sion Jenkins was the murderer of
Billie-Jo Jenkins and started to suspect Idelia, but this happened years in the
future. Because they were so focused on the time on Sion Jenkins being the
murder and was only searching for evidence for him they didn’t make the effort
to identify any patterns and links until later years when Sion Jenkins was
pleading to be shown un guilty and further research had to be made. Due to this
Sion Jenkins could have been wrongly acquitted and to improve this they should
of followed the steps clearly because they overlooked important pieces of
evidence. If they had earlier made links they would of researched more into
Idelia and realised his link with murders and raping where a pattern happening
around that time in the area.
